The Oregon Vortex is a famous tourist attraction and supposed paranormal site in Gold Hill, Oregon where normal laws of physics are seemingly violated or do not apply. It is said that within the Oregon Vortex, a person will assume a posture that inclines toward magnetic north and hence cannot stand erect. Contrary to the laws of perspective, as another person recedes towards magnetic south, they appear taller. When they approach, coming towards magnetic north, they appear shorter. Balls roll uphill and brooms stand on end. Some people even find relief there for back pain. The effects are said to be strongest when the moon is full.
The Oregon vortex is well known around the Pacific Northwest and surrounding area. These "paranormal sites" tend to have names like "Haunted Hill", "Magnetic Hill", or "Antigravity Hill", reflecting attribution by local folklore of the unusual properties of the area to such 'mysteries' as the supernatural or magnetism; as the names also suggest. However, these areas are typically found in hill country, suggesting to skeptics that the actual effect being experienced is optical illusion due to mildly sloped ground being interpreted by the eye as horizontal (see gravity hill), particularly where no distant horizon is visible as a reference.
