Osh is a city of about 300,000 in the Fergana Valley of southern Kyrgyzstan, allegedly 3000 years old. It is the "second capital" of the Kyrgyz Republic.
History
Babur, founder of the Mughal dynasty of Indian emperors and descendant of Timurlane, was a native of Osh and set out from there on his conquest of northern India.
Demographics
Osh has a mixed population of Kyrgyz and Uzbeks and was the scene of serious ethnic clashes in 1990.
Economy
Its industrial base, established during the Soviet regime, largely collapsed after the break-up of the Soviet Union and is only gradually being revived.
