Outaouais - Definition and Overview |
The Outaouais was a First Nation or North American Indian people who inhabited the area around the present day Canadian cities of Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec. As First Nation people did not have a written language the name Outaouais is a French phonetic representation of their name. Ottawa is the English spelling.
The Outaouais region in Quebec includes the city of Gatineau. It is on the east side of the Ottawa River opposite the nation's capital, Ottawa. In French, Outaouais is also the name for the river (rivière des Outaouais) and the term for someone from Ottawa.
