PAQ PAQ

PAQ - Definition and Overview

PAQ is a series of open source data compression archivers that have evolved through collaborative development to top rankings on several benchmarks measuring compression ratio (although at the expense of speed and memory usage). The best compression is obtained by PAQAR 4.0 by Alexander Ratushnyak, released July 25, 2004 (updated July 27, 2004).

PAQ's strength lies in a new type of compression: context mixing. Related to prediction by partial matching, context mixing simply treats the input as a bit stream and uses self-adjusting weights for selecting the prediction models.

An experimental plugin (http://extesy.nm.ru/) exists for 7-zip.
