The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a one of nine United States Department of Energy multiprogram national laboratories.
PNNL is located in Richland, Washington and has been operated by the Battelle Memorial Institute for at least 20 years. PNNL was created to support the Manhattan Project during World War II, and supported Hanford during the Cold War. Its current mission is to assist in the cleanup push at the Hanford Site and to develop environmental technology.
PNNL is a major employer in the area. Many Ph.D.s work for the laboratory on various aspects of science.
PNNL has a variety of scientific instrumentation available for certified use; these include transmission electron microscopes, nuclear magnetic resonance machines, a large Linux cluster, and other unique instruments.
Current work at PNNL includes organic light emitting diodes, characterization of nuclear materials, and much more.
