Painkiller (game) - Definition

Painkiller is a first-person shooter PC game released on April 12, 2004. It was published by DreamCatcher Interactive and developed by People Can Fly. It attempts to replicate the 'old-school FPS' gameplay of Doom and Serious Sam. It has 24 levels of seemingly random designs that include medieval castle, factory and lunatic asylum. Five of the levels are 'boss levels' with some of the largest FPS bosses to date. The game takes place in Purgatory and Hell. It is notable for using the Havok 2.0 physics engine extensively.

Painkiller was recently chosen as the official CPL 2005 World Tour game, a semi-controversial decision given the number of other games released in 2004 that are more suited for a large multiplayer competition. Unreal Tournament 2004, the fan favorite, was not chosen due to a switch in publishers from Atari to Midway.

Weapons

Painkiller has 5 guns, each with two modes of fire.

• Painkiller — The painkiller is a staff. The first function opens the end of the staff up and spins blades cutting and chopping any enemy that walks into it. The second function shoots a glowing orb that attaches to anything it hits. Hitting the fire button again will return the orb to the staff.
• Shotgun — This shotgun has a secondary function that slows enemies down by freezing them. After they're completely frozen a shot by anything will destroy the enemy.
• Stakegun — The stakegun is more or less a crossbow that shoots stakes at the enemy. It's secondary function is a grenade launcher.
• Chaingun — The chainguns primary function is a rocket launcher and the secondary function is a chaingun.
• Electro driver — The electro drivers primary function fires ninja stars at enemies. The secondary function shoots a stream of electricity at a close range.

Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell

Painkiller: Battle out of Hell is a expansion pack for Painkiller, released on November 22, 2004. It was developed by People Can Fly and published by DreamCatcher Interactive. Battle Out of Hell features an all-new 10-level single player campaign, two new weapons (each taking a page out of the original game's book with two fire modes each), new multiplayer modes, and improved visual effects.

New weapons

• Bolt Driver — The Bolt Driver is Painkiller's take on a sniper rifle, utilizing a new zoom feature, it fires five short pieces of rebar in quick succession.
• Flamethrower — Secondary fire is your standard burst of flame as in a typical flamethrower, and the primary fire is similar to the chaingun, only with a rate of fire that is much lower.
