Palestinian Legislative Council - Definition

The Palestinian Legislative Council, the legislature of the Palestinian Authority, is a unicameral body with 88 members, elected from 16 electoral districts in the West Bank and Gaza. The election of 1996 resulted in the following distribution:

  • Fatah - 68 seats (47 official, 21 unofficial, classed as ‘Independent’),
  • Secular non-affiliated - 12 seats
  • Islamist non-affiliated - 7 seats
  • Palestinian Democratic Union - 1 seat

Since October 7, 2003, Ahmed Qurei, former Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, is currently Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority.
