Pang De was revered in his day as a warrior of loyalty and courage. He once served under Ma Chao/Ma Teng, but he allied himself to Wei after being captured at the battle for Tong Gate (Chang An). When Guan Yu was gathering momentum in his invasion of the Wei, Pang De offered to lead the defense, building and taking his coffin into battle to signal his intention to fulfill his duties. During the encounter at Fan Castle another senior general, Yue Jin, became jelous of Pang De's success and ordered a retreat, even though he was winning the battle. Eventually, a massive flood caused the entire battlefield to become a minor lake, and with the boats he had prepared earlier, Guan Yu's army obliterated the Wei army, capturing Yue Jin and Pang De. Pang De refused to surrender and was executed, but Yue Jin allowed himself to be imprisoned.
