Pat was a fictional character created and performed by actress and comedienne Julia Sweeney for the American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. Pat was a sexually ambiguous character around whom there was great curiosity as to the real gender of the character.
Pat was overweight, with short curly black hair; Pat wore glasses and a blue country and western shirt, with tan slacks. Pat wore no makeup and in fact has very beige lips. Pat spoke in a nasally voice that sometimes squeaked. The character's sketches basically always revolved around the celebrity guest host of the show appearing in the skit and trying to discover Pat's true gender. Often times it would drive the person crazy.
The character of Pat was popular enough to spawn a feature length film called It's Pat. In the film, Pat breaks up with Pat's significant other, Chris (an equally sexually ambiguous character). Pat spends the entire film trying to win Chris back, while Pat's neighbour (Charles Rocket) becomes obsessed with Pat. The film was a critical and commercial bomb.
