Pat Smear, born Georg Ruthenberg, is a rock guitarist. He was a member of the 1970s punk rock band The Germs, and later recorded a few solo albums for SST Records.

He toured with Nirvana on its final tour in 1993, and performed with them on MTV Unplugged

Smear joined the Foo Fighters in 1994 and recorded guitar parts for the album The Colour and the Shape. He left the band in September 1997.

Smear renamed himself after learning about pap smears in high school, claiming they were the most disgusting thing he had ever heard of.
