Patriarch Alexei II is the current Patriarch of Moscow, which makes him head of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was born 23 february 1929 in Estonia, and is rumoured to have been a KGB agent during the Soviet period. He is currently (2004) in poor health. His name is tranliterated from the Russian alphabet into English in various forms, including Alexius, Alexei, and Alexy.
