Patriotic Salvation Movement - Definition and Overview

Politics of Chad

The Patriotic Salvation Movement (French: Mouvement Patriotique du Salut) is the ruling party of Chad. In the 2001 presidential elections, its candidate, Idriss Déby, picked up 63.2% of the vote, and it has 110 of the 155 seats in the Chadian National Assembly. Despite the majority, it governs in coalition with two smaller parties - the National Union for Democracy and Renewal, and the Union for Renewal and Democracy.

Before 1990 it was a rebel party, operating out of Sudan with the financial backing of Libya.
