Henry Paul Guinness Channon, Baron Kelvedon of Ongar (b. 1935) was Conservative MP for Southend West until 1997 at which time, he stood down and was created a Life Peer. He served in the government as President of the Board of Trade and Secretary of State for Trade and Industry from January 24, 1986 - June 13, 1987 and as Secretary of State for Transport from June 13, 1987 - July 24, 1989. Channon's time as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry was marred. The major issue of the day was a takeover by the Guiness group using an inflated stock value. As a member of the Guiness family there was no chance for Channon to intervene. In 1987 Channon's daughter died of a drug overdose following a party at an Oxford college.
