Pecan pie is a sweet custard pie featuring pecans that is considered a specialty of Southern U.S. cuisine. Pecan halves are stirred into a custard base of eggs, melted butter, and sugar or corn syrup. The resulting mixture is poured into a pie crust and baked until the custard sets. The pecan halves float to the top of the custard and are toasted forming a crunchy upper crust. Most pecan pie recipes include salt and vanilla as flavorings. Other ingredients such as chocolate and bourbon are popular additions to the recipe. Pecan pie is often served with whipped cream.
