Pend Oreille County is a county located in the state of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 11,732. The county seat is at Newport. It is named after the Pend D'Oreille Indian tribe, whose name is French for "earring."

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,692 km² (1,425 mi²). 3,627 km² (1,400 mi²) of it is land and 65 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.76% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,732 people, 4,639 households, and 3,261 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 6,608 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.53% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 2.88% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 2.04% from two or more races. 2.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,639 households out of which 29.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.50% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 5.50% from 18 to 24, 23.80% from 25 to 44, 29.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 100.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,677, and the median income for a family is $36,977. Males have a median income of $36,951 versus $20,693 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,731. 18.10% of the population and 13.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.60% of those under the age of 18 and 6.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
