Performative utterance - Definition and Overview

Performative utterances are speech acts which perform the action the sentence describes. Performative utterances are almost always in the first person present tense.

Examples:

  • "I now pronounce you man and wife."
  • "I sentence you to death."
  • "I promise to be there."
  • "I apologize."
