This glacier is particularly famous because of its impressive dimensions and its continuous downward movement, which produces accumulation and rupture of huge pieces of ice. It has a front of 5 km with a height above the lake level of 60 to 70 meters. It is about 30 km long and covers a surface area of 250 square kilometers (40 km2 more than the surface of Argentina's capital city, Buenos Aires). It was named after the explorer Francisco Moreno, a pioneer that studied the region in the 19th century.
