Peter Murray Taylor, Baron Taylor of Gosforth - Definition

Peter Murray Taylor, Baron Taylor of Gosforth (May 1,1930 - 28 April 1997) was the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 1992 until his retirement in 1996.

Taylor was called to the Bar in 1954, appointed as a High Court Judge in 1980 and to the Court of Appeal in 1988. His name became known to the wider public when he was appointed by then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to conduct an inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster of 1989. The Taylor Report, as it became known, led to the introduction of all-seater stadiums and the removal of fences around fans sitting areas. The following year he was promoted to Lord Chief Justice. He fell ill in 1996 and relinquished the responsibilities of his role in that year.
