Phil Andros was the pen name of Samuel Steward (1909-1993), a novelist and tattoo artist based in Oakland, California. He was the subject of Dear Sammy: Letters from Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas (Houghton Mifflin, 1977). As Phil Andros, Steward defined the obsession gay men have with tough young punks and other hard-edged males.
