Phoenix Islands - Definition and Overview

The Phoenix Islands are a sparsely populated island chain in the Pacific Ocean, east of the Gilbert Islands and west of the Line Islands.

The Phoenix Islands are a possession of Kiribati, but have no permanent population or government representation. The islands of the Phoenix Islands are:

  • Birnie Island
  • Enderbury Island
  • Kanton Island (also Abariringa or Canton Island)
  • Manra Island (also Sydney Island)
  • McKean Island
  • Nikumaroro Atoll (also Gardner Island)
  • Orona Atoll (also Hull Island)
  • Rawaki Island (also Phoenix Island)

In the island chain are also two reefs: Carondelet Reef and Winslow Reef.
