Looking north over South Piha beach to Lion Rock. North Piha beach is visible beyond. Piha is a coastal resort in northern New Zealand. It is located 28 kilometres west of Auckland city centre, on the Tasman Sea coast to the north of the Manukau Harbour, amidst the Waitakere Ranges. It is one of the most popular resorts in the area and a major day-trip destination for Aucklanders in summer. Despite this, the area has retained much of its natural beauty and isolation.
Piha is probably New Zealand's best-known surfing beach. This has a reputation for awesome surf. It was the birthplace of New Zealand board riding in 1956. Despite this, the black ironsand beach is notorious for its rips and currents, so is not a good beach for novices to attempt.
Piha's attractions, other than surfing and swimming, include bush walks. A blowhole is also located at Piha.
