Playland (often called Rye Playland) is an amusement park located in Rye, New York. Run by Westchester County, it is America's only government owned and operated amusement park. The park began operation on May 26 1928. The park was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. There is no charge for admission, but rides do cost money. According to its website, "Playland also offers free entertainment and has a beach, pool, boardwalk and pier on scenic Long Island Sound, lake boating, picnic area, mini golf and indoor ice skating" [1] (http://www.ryeplayland.org/). One of Playland's notable attractions is the Dragon Coaster. The dragon also serves as the park's mascot and appears in the Playland logo.
The hockey team the New York Rangers often practice at the Playland iceskating rink.
Rye Playland was the amusement park featured in the 1988 film "Big" starring Tom Hanks.
There is a Playland in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, which opens during the summer on the famous Hastings Park. Playland is operated by the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) also located in Vancouver.
