Point Douglas (Manitoba riding) - Definition and Overview

Point Douglas is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1968, and was formally established in the provincial election of 1969. The riding was eliminated by redistribution of 1979, but was re-established in 1989. It is located in the north-end of the City of Winnipeg.

Point Douglas is bordered on the east by St. Boniface and Elmwood, to the south by Fort Rouge, to the north by St. Johns, and to the west by Burrows, Wellington and Minto.

The riding's population in 1996 was 19,941. As of 1999, the average family income was $24,715, the lowest in the province. The riding also has the highest percentage of low-income residents in the province, at 67.6%. The unemployment rate is 25%. Three-quarters of the riding's residences are rented, and 37% of families are single-parent households.

Point Douglas is ethnically diverse. Thirty-three per cent of the riding's population is aboriginal, with a further 10% Filipino and 6% Ukrainian. Twenty-five per cent of the riding's industry is in manufacturing.

The NDP has won every election held in the riding. The current MLA is George Hickes, who was re-elected with almost 75% of the vote in 2003.
