Police action - Definition and Overview

The term police action has come into use in the United States after World War II.

It is generally used to describe any armed conflict (minor or major) the US has been in since that time period. This is mainly because Congress has not made a formal declaration of war against anyone since then. However, the President, as the commander-in-chief, is authorized to send in the armed forces when he deems necessary, but this is normally not done without a measure of Congressional control.
