The term Political Drama can be used in several senses. In one sense it describes a play, film or TV program that has a political component, whether reflecting the author's political opinion, or describing a politician or series of political events. Dramatists who have written political drama include Sergei Eisenstein, Bertolt Brecht, Jean Paul Sartre and Federico GarcĂ­a Lorca and many more. There have been many television series that can be classified as political drama, such as Yes, Prime Minister and The West Wing (television).

A political drama can be presented in the form of a roman a clef or with fictional characters representing actual persons, to avoid legal or other action being taken against the writer, or to show events in a symbolic light.
