The popemobile is an informal term for the specially designed vehicle used by the pope during public appearances. It is a modified Land Rover with a small windowed "room" in the back where the Pope stands. Since the pope would naturally be a potential target for assassination attempts while on tour, the popemobile is now fitted with bulletproof glass. The original change to the usage of the "popemobile" was after the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in 1981.
Popemobile was also the name of an indie rock band in Perth, Australia in the early 1990s.
