Porbandar is a town in the Gujarat state of India. Porbandar is also the a district in the state of Gujarat.

City

This city is an important port located on the Arabian Sea on the west coast of the Indian subcontinent. It has a population of over 100,000. The town is best known for being the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. In the 10th century it was known as 'Pauravelakul' and then 'Sudamapuri' (After Sudama, friend of Lord Krishna). It is today a tourist centre and is served by an airport and train line.

The name "Porbandar" came from the combination of two words i.e. the famous goddess "Porai" and "Bandar" means Port.
