Port Victoria is the capital of the Seychelles and is situated on the north-eastern side of the Mahé island. Its population was 24,701 in 1997. It was first established as the seat of the British colonial government
The principal exports of Port Victoria are vanilla, coconuts, coconut oil, tortoise shell, soap, and guano. Landmarks include the Seychelles International Airport, which was completed in 1971, a botanic garden and a polytechnic institute.
A major bridge in Port Victoria was destroyed in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
