The Prefet de Police or more formally the Prefet de la Zone de Defense de Paris provide police and emergency services to Paris Regions ile de France Consisting of Paris and the surrounding eight departments of Hauts-de-Seine , Seine-Saint-Denis, Seine-et-Marne, Val-de-Marne, Essonne, Yvelines and Val d'Oise. The actual city of Paris is both a commune and a department, but as the capital of France the national government has been responsible for providing law enforcement and emergency services since the Paris Commune of 1871. This means that Paris does not have its own police municipal and that the Police Nationale provides these services directly as a subdivision of France's Ministry of the Interior.
Mission
Headed by a Prefet or prefect, the Prefecture is responsible for the following:
- joint security of Paris with the military,
- issuing identification cards, drivers licenses, passports, residential and work permits for foreigners,
- motor vehicle registration and traffic control,
- registration of associations, and their creation, status modification and dissolution,
- Managing the police and firefighters.
The prefect also serves to represent the national government locally and that he has the power to issue arretes which are local writs used make rules dealing with local matters.

Organization
The PP is headed by a politically appointed prefect who is assisted by the prevote, who is the senor police officer of the force. The Prefecture of Police is divided into three sub-prefectures still called Prefectures due to their importance.
