Preinitiation complex - Definition

A preinitiation complex (abbreiviated PIC) is an ordered combination of six general transcription factors:

  • TFIIA
  • TFIIB
  • TFIID
  • TFIIE
  • TFIIF
  • TFIIH

The preinitiation complex combines with RNAP near the transcriptional start site, to support a basal level of transcription.
