A Priceless painting.

In November 1994, after theorising about the nature of the universe, the artist Mark Bridger painted what may become 'the greatest painting of all time', superseding the likes of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

It was titled "The eternal and infinite universe" and is an oil painting on a wood panel measuring approximately 95cms x 122 cms. At first glance it is a beautiful painting of a blue setting sun. However, on closer inspection the lines of the field below the sun carry a text, encapsulating a certain theory or understanding of the universe (that it is infinite and eternal) from which the artist deduced, among other things, that the visible universe should be accelerating apart. This deduction ran counter to the assumptions of astronomers at the time, who were anticipating a slowing-down of the visible universe's expansion. With the proclamation that he thought the text represented the ultimate understanding of the universe, the artist priced the picture at £7 million when it was exhibited in the Jelly Leg'd Chicken Gallery in Reading, UK, in January 1995. The painting was not sold. However, it started to emerge from about two years later, with gathering astronomical observations of supernovae, that the visible universe does appear to be accelerating apart. Astronomers have coined the term 'dark energy' for this phenomenon but are still at a loss to explain it. So Mark Bridger's painting 'The eternal and infinite universe', which carries an explanation, may yet be considered 'the greatest painting of all time', and, as such, priceless.
