Primulales by Cronquist system

The primrose is any of over 500 species of low-growing herbs of the genus Primula, family Primulaceae. Some species are grown for their ornamental flowers. This genus includes cowslips.

Perennial primroses bloom during the spring; their flowers can be purple, yellow, red, pink, and/or white. Generally, they prefer filtered sunlight and a temperature around 20°C.

Both the common name and scientific name refer to it being the first (prime) rose to open in spring.

The Evening primrose (Oenothera) is a completely different plant belonging to the family Onagraceae.
