Prince George County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 33,047. Its county seat is Prince George6. It is located in the Richmond-Petersburg region and is a portion of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 730 km² (282 mi²). 688 km² (266 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.76% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,047 people, 10,159 households, and 8,096 families residing in the county. The population density is 48/km² (124/mi²). There are 10,726 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (40/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 60.93% White, 32.54% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 1.73% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 2.19% from other races, and 2.03% from two or more races. 4.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,159 households out of which 41.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.50% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.30% are non-families. 17.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 13.60% from 18 to 24, 33.30% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 7.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 117.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 120.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $49,877, and the median income for a family is $53,750. Males have a median income of $37,363 versus $26,347 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,196. 8.00% of the population and 6.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.40% of those under the age of 18 and 8.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
