Prince Luitpold of Bavaria (12 March 1821—12 December 1912) was a Bavarian prince of the House of Wittelsbach. The third son of King Ludwig I, Luitpold was appointed regent for his nephew Ludwig II in 1886 when Ludwig was declared mentally incompetent. Following the king's mysterious death a few days later, Luitpold continued to serve as regent for the new king, Otto, Ludwig's insane brother. Prince Luitpold served in this capacity until his death in 1912, when he was succeeded by his eldest son, Prince Ludwig.
