Project Gotham Racing (PGR) is a launch title for Microsofts' Xbox video game console. It was developed by Bizarre Creations and published by Microsoft. It swiftly became the second best selling game for the Xbox after Halo. PGR is a sequel to Metropolis Street Racer, released for SEGA's Dreamcast, also developed by Bizarre Creations. The name change was necessary, because SEGA holds the copyright to the original name. A sequel to this game was released in 2003 titled Project Gotham Racing 2.

PGR differs from most racing games in that winning a race doesn't mean the player advances to the next round, instead advancement in PGR was down to a combination of being fast enough to meet the challenge set, and scoring enough Kudos points to advance. Kudos points are gained through the player's driving skills, such as power sliding around a corner at speed, or overtaking other NPCs in the race.
