Propitiation is a theological term describing an atoning sacrifice. Generally, Christian belief is that the death of Jesus on the cross appeased the justice of God and effected a reconciliation between God and mankind. Christian theology relates this to the 'mercy seat' or propitiatory in the Holy of Holies, in the Jewish temple.

Judaism rejects this belief, maintaining that perfect atonement can be achieved through the study and practice of the Torah's 613 commandments.

This idea about sin and man's actions is associated in some Christian theological systems with indemnity and imputation.
