Under British rule, the Queen's Official Birthday was a public holiday in the second Monday in June, but was replaced by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day after the handover to China. The Commonwealth Day used to be a school holiday. Dr Sun Yat Sen's birthday anniversary is a school holiday. The Sino-Japanese War Victory Anniversary ("the Saturday preceding the last Monday in August" and "Liberation Day, being the last Monday in August" (重光紀念日) before the handover) was a public holiday, before being replaced by the Labour Day and the PRC National Day.

According to Hong Kong laws, if a designated public holiday falls on a Sunday or on the same day of another holiday, the immediate following weekday would be a public holiday.
