Pulcinella (ballet) - Definition and Overview

Pulcinella was one of Stravinsky's first neoclassical compositions, re-using material of some chamber music compositions by Pergolesi. The title role refers to the pulcinella clownesque character.

Pulcinella, a work for string ensemble, takes Stravinsky's new concern with the 'classical style' to a literal level: it is a re-working of the music of the early 18th century composer Pergolesi (and some of his contemporaries). Stravinsky borrows specific themes and music from the earlier composer and rewrites them, interjecting modern rhythms, cadences and harmonies, but all the while retaining the lilt and feel of the original.

It was created as a ballet by the Ballets Russes in 1920, with costumes and sets by Picasso.
