Pulmonary fibrosis is a disease of the lungs, characterized by the gradual replacement of the alveoli with fibrotic scar tissue.
Causes
The causes of pulmonary fibrosis are unknown. Researchers suspect that genetic predisposition, environmental toxins, or auto-immune disease may be factors.
There is some evidence of a higher incidence of pulmonary fibrosis among firefighters and other individuals exposed to air pollution released by the September_11,_2001_attacks on the World Trade Center.
Treatment
There is no known effective treatment for pulmonary fibrosis. However, a number of experimental treatments are currently undergoing human trials.
