Radu Ștefan Mazăre (born July 5, 1968) is a Romanian politician. Has served one full term in office as Mayor of Constanţa, starting as an independent, but finishing as a Social Democratic Party (PSD) member. He was reelected in June 2004.
Career
An ex journalist, he was involved in a famous incident where Ion Iliescu called a coleague of his "You, animal!". Founded the Telegraf newspaper, the Soti-Neptun television network and entered business as a shareholder for the Conpress holding.
Joined the Democratic Party (PD) and was elected in the lower house of the Romanian Parliament. He later resigned due to "differences between electoral promises and realities of government".
Controversies
He is considered one of the top 100 richest people in Romania and is highly controversial due to accusations of being a Social Democratic Party (PSD) Local Baron, Together with the prefect of Constanţa, Gheorghe Martin, they control almost all the media (TV stations and newspapers) and newspaper distribution networks in Constanţa.
He is also known for putting his name to be written on every project where the city hall was involved. For example, his name is written on every bus of the public transport of Constanţa.
