Rastafari Rastafari

Rastafari - Definition

Ras Tafari was the title used by Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia during his time as tenure Regent and Crown Prince (1916-1928).

Rastafari is another name for the religious movement of Rastafarianism.

It should be noted that Ras Tafari was never an adherent of Rastafari and may have implored the hierarchy of the Tewahedo Church (Orthodox Church of Ethiopia) to send missionaries to Jamaica to oppose the religious movement.

Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie became the king for the black race when he was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia in November 1930. Early rastafarians were prosecuted in Kingston Jamaica in 1934 for refusing loyalty to the king of the United Kingdom. Rastafari has no structure or priests. It has become widely known through reggae, especially Bob Marley. Rastafarians are known for their distinctive dreadlock hair and use of cannabis
