Reform Party of Minnesota - Definition and Overview

The Reform Party of Minnesota was the name of what is now known as the Independence Party of Minnesota.

Founded in 1992 by Minnesota political activists, including former US Senator Dean Barkley, the party affiliated with Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot's Reform Party.

During the 2000 US Presidential Election, the party disaffiliated with the national Reform Party over the national party's endorsement of former Nixon Administration speechwriter Pat Buchanan for president and reverted to its previous name, the Independence Party. Former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura was elected as the Reform Party candidate in 1998, resigned his membership in protest during the Pat Buchannan controversy, and later rejoined when the party terminated its affiliation with the national party.
