Reghin (Hungarian: Szászrégen, German: Sächsisch Regen) is a city in Mureş county in the Transylvania region of Romania, on the Mureş river.
Population
As of 2004, it has a population of 35.700.
History
It was first mentioned in 1228, however, the town was much older, some historians believe it was founded during the conquests of Transylvania by Ladislau I of Hungary, guessing by its strategical location and its defence system.
The land nearby, originally owned by the Hungarian crown, it was given to two Hungarian nobiliar families: Tomaj and Kacsik. The city was destroyed after the Mongol invasion of 1241 and devastated again in 1285 after an incursion of the Tatars and Cumans.
Germans were colonized in here and in 1330 a German church was built, that hosts the oldest Latin inscription in a church of Transylvania.
