Remus John Lupin is a fictional character in the Harry Potter novels, portrayed by David Thewlis in the films.

Remus Lupin was introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He taught as the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor for a semester. He resigned at the end of the year when Severus Snape let it slip that he was a werewolf. He taught the class about dark creatures and gave Harry private anti-Dementor lessons.

Lupin was bitten when he was young. He was afraid he would not be able to attend school, but Albus Dumbledore allowed him into Hogwarts. He transformed in the Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade, entering it through a secret passage in the Whomping Willow. Remus kept his transformations a secret, but his friends (James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew) worked out what he was in the second year. They learned to become animagi to keep him company during the transformation in their fifth year. He was given the nickname "Moony" by his friends because of his transformations. Sirius Black wanted to play a prank by telling Snape where Remus went every month. James stopped Snape before any physical damage was done, but Severus still found out Remus was a werewolf.

Remus was prefect, though he had trouble excersizing discipline over his friends. Sirius said he was the "good boy" in the Order of the Phoenix, and J. K. Rowling said he was the "mature" one. He did not participate in the James and Sirius' bullying (as far as the readers know.)

Remus reappeared in Order of the Phoenix, but nothing more than little cameos here and there. In The Prisoner of Azkaban, he was described with "light brown hair" that was greying. He has shabby clothing because, as a werewolf, he suffers from poverty and it is hard for him to find a job. With the wolfsbane potion provided by Snape during his time as a teacher, he can turn into a more docile wolf. His biggest fear is the full moon.

His name comes from the legend of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, who were raised by wolves. His last name, "lupin" is Latin for "wolf."
