Reservation is something reserved.

Often it is a tract of land set apart for a special purpose:

• an area for indigenous peoples to live in:
  • Indian reservation
  • List of Indian reservations in the United States
  • Indian reserve (in Canada)

• an area where hunting is not permitted: see National park
