Richard Hoagland is a leading contributor of controversial astronomical theories, especially concerning Mars. While Hoagland's books have sold well, most mainstream scientists consider his assertions at best highly speculative, while others consider Hoagland a kook.
His jobs have included:
Richard Hoagland has investigated evidence that he claims may point to the existence of technological artifacts on Mars. For four years, he and his team have studied what he claims are previously hidden data from American and Soviet lunar missions. He continues to make allegations of conspiracy and coverup by scientists involved in current missions to Mars including Mars Pathfinder, Mars Global Surveyor, and the Mars Exploration Rovers.
Hoagland has made numerous claims about the existence of extraterrestrial life which he believes is supported by the presence of the alleged face on Mars. He claims that the face was part of a city constructed on Mars by a race of aliens. Critics have asserted higher resolution images of the Martian areas in question obtained by the Mars Global Surveyor fail to support Hoaglands's claims.
Hoagland has pointed out artifacts in Lunar Orbiter images of the moon and claimed that they were large alien structures. These artifacts have been well documented as byproducts of the photographic developing process onboard the spacecraft and can be seen in just about every image from the Lunar Orbiter program. He also claims that the Apollo program astronauts discovered evidence of alien life on the Moon.
Hoagland has been a guest on Coast-to-Coast AM many times.
