Richard Lewis "Dick" Thornburgh (born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 16, 1932) was the Republican governor of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1987. His handling of the Three Mile Island crisis doubtless helped persuade George H. W. Bush to tap him for U.S. Attorney General (1988–1991). He resigned as Attorney General in 1991 to run for the open U.S. Senate seat of the late H. John Heinz III but in a surprise upset was defeated in the November special election by Democrat Harris Wofford.

In 2004, Thornburgh was one-half of the review panel established by CBS to investigate the problems within their news organization because of the Killian memos. [1] (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/22/politics/main644969.shtml)
