Richard Vinroot - Definition and Overview

Richard Vinroot (born 14 April 1941) is an attorney and politician from Charlotte, North Carolina. Vinroot served as mayor of Charlotte from 1991 to 1995. In 1996, he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for governor of North Carolina, losing in the primary to Robin Hayes. He took the Republican nomination in 2000, but lost the general election to Democrat Mike Easley. Vinroot again sought the Republican nomination for governor again in the 2004 election, but narrowly lost to Patrick Ballantine in the Republican primary. As neither achieved a 40% plurality of the primary vote, Vinroot could have called for a runoff primary between himself and Ballantine, but chose instead to concede the nomination.
