Richie McCaw - Definition and Overview


Richard "Richie" McCaw is a New Zealand Rugby player. He was born on December 31, 1980) and grew up in the south of New Zealand, being educated in Dunedin before settling in Christchurch.

McCaw plays as openside flanker for the Canterbury Crusaders team in the Super 12 competition, and was instrumental in their unprecedented unbeaten season in 2002.

McCaw is 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) tall, and weight 105 kg (230 lb). His nickname is Fluffy.

McCaw represented New Zealand at under-19 age group level in 1999, and in the national Colts team in 2000 and 2001. He played his first test for the All Blacks in 2002 against Ireland and was named Man of the Match.

McCaw was nominated as a finalist for the International Rugby Players' Association's "Player of the year" award in 2003, and named New Zealand's "Player of the year" the same year.
