Robert Hoddle - Definition and Overview

Robert Hoddle (20 April 1794 - 24 October 1881) was a surveyor for Port Philip in the 1830s, and the creator of the Hoddle Grid in central Melbourne.

Hoddle came to New South Wales in 1823, and he spent time with explorer John Oxley in Queensland and surveying the Blue Mountains.

In 1837 he became the senior surveyor in Port Philip, and designed Melbourne, Geelong, Willamstown and other places.

His designs were an innovation for Australian cities because Melbourne and its inner suburbs were well planned in the grid style.

Hoddle was also an artist. Many of his paintings are in the State Library of Victoria, and they show scenes of New South Wales and Port Philip. His works will be offered for sale in a South Yarra gallery on October 12 2004.

He himself built a house on the corner of Bourke and Spencer Streets.
